| It
is a common misconception that Olfactory Artists and Perfumers are
solely devoted to the creation of commercial body products.The Art of
Perfumery goes back to ancient times. The word Perfume means
through smoke, as early scents were burned (like incense) and the smoke
used to add fragrance to (through permeation) cloth,
garments, leathers and spaces as in the ritual burning of
frankincense
in churches.The images above are examples of how Olfactory Arts are
being explored
today. Perfumery in the commercial sense is very different from the ages old Artisan (alchemists) Craft of hand blending and bottling essence. A perfumer/scent artist can create a body of work in exactly the same way as a painter or musician. It is possible through practice and devotion to an art form, to be able to detect a particular artists signature through their work. In this respect one is just as able to identify an Olfactory body of art to it's artist by smelling it, as it is to recognize a Picasso when it is seen with the eyes. With the appointment of Chandler Burr (writer and former New York Times Fragrance Critic) to the position of Curator of Olfactory Arts at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, the shift away from scent solely as a consumer good to scent as a true art form is finally seeing a turn and as so many independent Artisans are now working in this area, or have shifted their focus from merely creating things that smell good to exploring deeper reasons why we have such profound connections to scent. This is a great time to be working in the Olfactory Arts, bringing this beautiful medium back to the people where it belongs. |

Sense of Smell Workshop |
||
| SENSE OF SMELL/COLOR WORKSHOP The basic workshop covers a range of smells, and how we relate to them. It is designed to change the way we approach scent in our daily lives, through mindfully exploring familiar (and some not so familiar) scents. The workshop may also serve as a creative aid to those within the arts, by opening up the possibilities through a greater appreciation and understanding of this, our most powerful sense. We also use color association, as many people relate to scent and color in similar ways. Workshop includes worksheet/booklet, your own (take with) sample set of scents used in the workshop. - Cost: 65.00 pr. person Max (in house) Class size 15 people. Min. Class size 6 people.. Groups welcome - Time 4 hours with a refreshment break at the half way point (on us) |
